Frequently Asked Questions - Training

  • Your first class will typically involve a brief introduction to the gym and the instructors, followed by a warm-up and some basic techniques. The class will be structured to accommodate students of all levels, so don't worry if you're a beginner.

    If you are new to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, you may also first attend a 121 intro class (free of charge). The instructor will take you through the history and customs of our sport, as well as show you some self defence and groundwork.

  • No, prior experience is not required. Our classes are designed for students of all levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners.

  • You should wear comfortable workout clothes and a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gi (uniform). If you don't have a gi, the gym will have one you can borrow or purchase. some flip flops so your feet are covered between the changing rooms and the mats.

  • After your intro class, you may be invited to join a trial class. We will do our best to lend you a clean gi that fits well. Please note that you must wear a t shirt underneath your gi.

  • The frequency of your training is entirely up to you, but we recommend at least 2-3 classes per week for optimal progress.

  • Absolutely not! BJJ is for anyone regardless of gender, age, or fitness level. We have a diverse range of students at our gym, and we welcome anyone interested in learning the art.

  • Our classes are open to all ages, but we do ask that minors under the age of 18 have a parent or guardian present during their first class.

  • Yes, we do offer private lessons for those who want more individualised instruction or to work on specific techniques. Please contact us for more information.

  • Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a safe sport when practiced with proper technique and under the supervision of a qualified instructor. Our gym places a strong emphasis on safety and proper technique in all of our classes.

  • We will do our best to accommodate late arrivals, however if it is your first class, it is important that you arrive 20 minutes before the class. This allows us to show you around the academy and introduce you to the instructor.

  • Yes, you must keep your feet covered between the changing rooms and the mats – this protects your feet and the hygiene of the academy (shoes are also fine).

  • Yes, this is very important. You and your training partners are likely to be very sweaty after training – no one likes a smelly gi. To protect the fabric of your gi, do not wash it higher than 40 degrees and keep it away from the tumble dryer.

  • At the academy! We have our own shop including gis, rash guards, shorts, backpacks and t shirts. We also sell water and coconut water at the front desk.

FAQs - Membership

  • Memberships cannot be transferred from one person to another, not even from one family member to another.

  • There are several ways to cancel:

    - Contact us – send an email with your request.

    - Add-on Memberships:If you no longer wish to be financially responsible for additional members attached to your memberships please submit a cancellation for each additional member. If you do not submit a request for cancellation for your add-on members their memberships will remain active and you will continue to be billed.

    Cancellation within 14 days of initial purchase:

    You are entitled to a 13-day cooling off period, meaning that if you notify PutneyBJJ within 14 days, you will receive a full refund less any single classes attended which the drop in rate will be applied. To understand the details of your cooling off period, please review your membership agreement carefully.

    Monthly payment memberships:

    Where you have a monthly payment membership (that is not for a specified term or commitment period), you may cancel by providing notice to Putney BJJ in writing or in person at our academy. Upon your request to cancel, future monthly payments will be stopped, and your last month’s prepaid dues will be applied. Please review your specific membership agreement for a complete explanation of cancellation rights.

    Commitment Monthly Payment memberships:

    During the Commitment Period: Where you have a Commitment Monthly Payment membership, you are not entitled to cancel your membership during the Commitment Period (even though you are making monthly payments). The Commitment Period can be found on the first page of your membership agreement. Specific exceptions may apply, allowing you to cancel your membership where certain events specified by your membership agreement take place, such as death, disability, relocation (subject to certain conditions) or military deployment.

    After the Commitment Period: You may cancel by providing notice to Putney BJJ either in writing or in person at our academy. Upon your request to cancel, future monthly payments will be stopped, and your last month’s prepaid dues will be applied.     Yearly Auto-Renewal, Term/Paid in Full (non-renewable), and Prepaid memberships:

    Upon receipt of your request to cancel your Yearly Auto-Renewal, Limited-Term or Prepaid membership, your club access and membership will end at the end of your current paid term. You are not entitled to receive a refund of fees paid. Specific exceptions may also apply, allowing you to cancel your membership where certain events specified by your membership agreement take place, such as death, disability, relocation (subject to certain conditions) or military deployment. The length of your term or prepaid period can be found on the first page of your membership agreement. Please review your specific membership agreement for a complete explanation of cancellation rights.

  • You may freeze your membership for 1-3 months once a year, there is a £25/month maintenance fee.

    Please note that your membership must be active and you must be a member in good standing to be placed on freeze.

    Extended freezes may be available if one of the following factors apply:

    - Medical – a temporary medical situation which renders you unable to use the academy for a specified amount of time.

    - Work Transfer – a temporary out-of-area work transfer that takes you more than 50 miles from Putney BJJ

    - Volunteer Work – a temporary extended volunteer program that takes you more than 50 miles from Putney BJJ

    - Military – a temporary active-duty military transfer or deployment to a location more than 50 miles from Putney BJJ facility.
